| Accreditation of Prior Certificated or Experiential Learning (APCEL) |
| APCEL is a process wherby candidates can have their previous learning recognised, wherever it has taken place. It may already have been assessed and a formal certificate awarded (APCL), or demonstrated through relevant work/life experience (APEL). |
| Certificated Learning |
| Where learning has already been assessed, candidates will need to provide details of the learning outcomes which have been met in the work for which any particular certificate was awarded. |
| Level |
| Credit points (including those gained from programmes within the existing professional framework) are awarded at a variety of levels and certificates awarded from one programme can only be used to seek exemption from work in another at the same level, e.g. year one of a first degree cannot be used to gain exemption from a module at Master's level. |
| Credit Points |
| The number of credit points awarded in relation to one piece of certificated learning may not be exactly equivalent to another. |
| Experiential Learning |
| To be exempted from a module via experiential learning, candidates must provide appropriate evidence of having met the module learning outcomes. This evidence must be capable of assessment, moderation and external scrutiny. |
| Making an APCEL Claim |
| Although procedures will vary from university to university, the process for each individual should be quite straightforward if candidates focus on learning outcomes. |
