Higher Specialist Level
Introduction
The higher specialist level has a specific focus on the knowledge and skills needed to make complex judgements and discharge high levels of responsibility for the co-ordination of social support and the management of risk.

The minimum academic level for programmes leading to a post-qualifying award in higher specialist social work is Master's level.  This level offers opportunities to begin to develop career pathways in professional practice, management, education and applied professional research.  The learning associated with the higher specialist level may be one component of an advanced programme of professional study leading to a master's degree.

Candidates wishing to enter programmes at Higher Specialist level will normally hold either:
  • a full Post-Qualifying Award in Social Work (PQSW) from the existing framework; or
  • a Specialist level award in the revised framework.
Admission procedures will provide access for those without either of the certificated entry qualifications shown above.
Practitioners wishing to make an application to programmes at this level will be provided with an opportunity to demonstrate appropriate levels of existing knowledge and skills to support the reasonable expectation of successful completion of a programme of study at this level.  Admissions arrangements will vary and prospective students should make enquiries in relation to these through the appropriate university.
